Every June, rainbows light up social feeds as brands show their support for Pride. But behind the celebration? A surge in online hate. Brands honoring Pride are hit with a predictable spike in hate speech, slurs, and targeted vitriol.
We’ve run the numbers. And over the last four years, Respondology’s data shows this pattern isn’t random—it’s routine. So if your brand plans to show up for Pride in 2025, you’ll need a real plan to protect your people, your campaign, and your community.
What Happens Online During Pride Month?
In a word? Hate. Since 2021, Respondology has hidden 3.4 million comments during Pride Months alone. In 2024, the spike was especially sharp:
- 1 in every 50 hidden comments contained anti-LGBTQ+ slurs
- 7.2% more comments were hidden in June 2024 vs. other months
- The June hide rate has grown 9.1% in just four years
- Comments containing anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric jumped 23.8% during Pride Month
And that’s not all. Two industries stood out in our research: Sports and Retail. Both saw massive increases in anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment between January 2021 and December 2024.

The message is clear: the backlash is real—and it’s getting louder.
What Does This Mean for Brands?
Every hateful comment chips away at the trust you’ve built with your audience—and it doesn’t just hurt your brand. It directly impacts LGBTQ+ community members and your own social team, who are often the first to read and manage the ugliest comments.
Some brands pull back over time, dialing down their Pride efforts to avoid backlash. But that’s not allyship. And, newsflash, Gen Z and younger millennials can tell. They’re not looking for rainbow-colored logos. They’re looking for action—and they’re paying attention to how brands respond when things get tough. Brands that care need to feel safe speaking up, and their audiences need to feel safe with them.
The good news? You can protect your brand and your values by preparing ahead of time.
How Brands Can Prepare for Pride Month 2025
Be proactive—not performative. Your best defense is a plan that’s ready before the trolls show up.
- Schedule content in advance and set up reactive protocols for weekends and off-hours, when hate tends to spike.
- Use smart moderation tools, like Moderate by Respondology, to auto-hide slurs and threats in real time. You can’t stop the hate from showing up—but you can stop it from sticking around. And, if you work with us, you’ll have moderation running on your campaigns in under 48 hours.
- Partner with LGBTQ+ creators and organizations, and have their backs. Support means more than cash and visibility. Protect them the same way you protect your brand.
The Cost of Silence
TL;DR: The rainbow comes with rain. Be sure to bring an umbrella.
The trolls aren’t going anywhere. But silence? That’s what helps them grow. If your brand wants to celebrate Pride, you’ve also got to be ready for the reality that comes with it—just like the LGBTQ+ community has to be.
You’ve got a platform. Use it bravely. Moderate wisely. Speak clearly. And never forget: Pride is both a protest and a party. If you’re going to show up—show up all the way.
